Keeping yourself and pupils safe
As commented throughout the website, children's safety on the internet is paramount. Search engines need filters and access to strangers denied. It is imperative that using Google and Youtube is minimised infront of the children- they do not see you searching as you cannot guarantee the information that will come up.
Having read Think You Know- the sections for teachers and children is threw up an issue I had never thought about. Films
As teachers we want to create stimulating lessons which inspire the children to create a piece of work and often a short clip from a film is used to create an atmosphere. But should a suitable clip from a PG film be being shown in the classroom? No is the answer because we are not parents. We do not have the authority or guidance to suggest that this film is suitable for the children. I had genuinely never thought of this before as automatically you see PG films as suitable films. However as teachers, if we are showing videos they must be of a U rating. How many exciting U films do you know of? The challenge is on to find such films. And this is where the CEOP come into play; they have a wealth of resources ready to recommend that are suitable for the classroom for all ages.
Additionally the website has made me consider my own internet safety. Facebook- if you are my friend on Facebook you can gather enough information about me for fraud within minutes. If you're not my friend, you can see a picture of me and my name. I have set my profile to secure, but you can still see a picture. It is therefore imperative that I do not have an incriminating photograph of myself (not that I have any!) in-case any parents/carers/governors try to see what my social life looks like. Facebook is a prying service and children and parents needs to be warned of the dangers. Whilst on GPP there was an internet safety session held for parents in which they were suggested that their children don't use search engines like Google etc. As a teacher it is my responsibility to be promoting safe internet usage and be advising parents on suitable websites.
