Reflection on GPP
I have completed my first teaching practice! Blimey what an amazing learning curve. I have managed to incorperate lots of ICT into all of my lessons.
The Interactive Whiteboard was used in many ways- for games, to mind map ideas and for the children to annotate each other's work.
It was commented upon by my School based tutor that my use of ICT was "excellent" whilst also commenting that I do not rely on it too heavily. I have to admit that I got stuck in a rut with always displaying the learning objective on the IWB but since have realised that it is best that it is present throughout the lesson so having it displayed above the board or on a flipchart so it can be referred to throughout the lesson.
I had one incident during a RE lesson where the board froze and I couldn't use any of the videos I had prepared to show the children. I had watched the videos the previous night and so was able to tell the children in detail what they were going to watch. This experience taught me that it was imperative to prepare all resources, try them out but also be ready to have a backup plan.
The visualiser was used everyday to display children's work or to demonstrate an activity sheet. I implemented two stars and a wish and by the end of the placement the children were adapting to the concept and giving well thought out improvements to work.
Overall I enjoyed using ICT on placement and it was not as daunting as first thought. However, I often think that I wasted too much time when preparing lessons. I would spend an hour on a powerpoint when it was not essential. I am gradually learning when ICT is best and where other mediums could be used.
Future ICT use
On FPP I intend to use Espresso, especially the News feature to ensure the children have a an understanding of the events in the world. I would like to use video cameras or audio recording as a formative assessment tool but also to enliven how the children record their results. My FPP placement uses SMARTboard and so I will have to refine my skills in this area as I have spent the past 8 weeks using a Promethian board.
