Learning Wiki
A Wiki is: "a website that allows the creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser"
I started this week wondering what a Wiki was. I have ended the week knowing a little bit more information but sadly not knowing the full extent to its possibilities.
This week we have transferred our facebook document over to the wiki. It was easy to transfer over as it was a simple cosy and paste process.
Here is a screen shot of our document on Facebook. As you can see it looks bland and uninteresting and the only variation in the style is the contrast in bold and normal font.
We changed the graphology of the document, added colour and added pictures. It is now much more visually appealing and children will find it easier to read. and made it much more colourful and easy on the eye.
It was really beneficial working collaboratively on this piece as those with the subject knowledge could help those without and this could be translated into the classroom environment as the HA children could be in groups with LA children and the collaboration could give the LA's the support they need. Additionally teaching somebody else a skill cements the knowledge the 'teacher' has and so this would be a beneficial process for both the HA and LA.
Wiki is great for making colourful changes and adding videos and pictures. All the documents are listed under similar subject/topics and so it is easy to access relevant information. For these reasons a Wiki is much more child friendly, compared to Facebook, and would be something I could create with Upper Key Stage 2 children. A task such as explaining a science concept (the current theme) could be the cross curricular task and they could make a Wiki page for somebody in another school. Linking up with another school or class would be great in this instance as constructive criticism could come from their peers who are requiring the information.
From a teacher's perspective this grouping of ideas and resources is great as little time would be wasted searching for relevant information. Lesson plans and resources could be contained on a Wiki listed under relevant subject headings. An extension of this idea would be for trainee teachers to share ideas on a PGCE Wiki.
However, I am still finding the Wiki document a little difficult to edit. For this reason I need to refine my skills in this area before creating one with the children as I would not want to become stuck in-front of them. I would however have the children searching the wiki (like an encyclopaedia) for information.
